Job Purpose

Mechanical SME to Lead/Support multidisciplinary facility projects by successfully performing mechanical engineering responsibilities such as evaluation and improvement of mechanical systems within the HDMA Facilities Department team scope. Work with contractors to verify that the design and construction of new mechanical systems meet specifications, code, and performance expectations. Monitor progress and performance against the project plan; resolve operational problems, minimize delays, identify, develop, and gather necessary resources to complete the project. Typical project or engineering values range from $0.5 M to $500 M.

 

Analyzes current operating conditions and recommends new preventative and proactive methods for maintaining and monitoring facilities systems across the department. Evaluates facility standards and practices to improve maintenance procedures and ensure optimal operational efficiency. Complies with organizational and governmental safety and engineering best practices. Coordinates response to emergency situations and ensures that corrective measures are rapid and thorough. May work with multiple components including HVAC systems, air/liquid cooling systems, power distribution units, fire systems, life safety systems, etc. Involved in business planning process and long-term investment planning. Participates in the planning and installation of new facility systems and provides knowledge of maintenance, repair, and operations for various infrastructure, equipment, and building disciplines

 

Formal and informal mentorship of less experienced engineers across the department.

Key Accountabilities

• Technical Subject Management - Apply Mechanical and Facilities expertise in HDMA business planning operations. Facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practice to impact decisions at Site / Dept / Unit level. Manage mission critical utility infrastructure reliability, capacity, and safety. Develop tracking / reporting to accurately communicate consumption, identify / resolve abnormalities, assess utility capacity versus demand, and analyze operational trends. Evaluate new technology and manage system end-of-life characteristics, seeking opportunities for infrastructure innovation.
• Technical Project Management -  Work with internal customers and external consultants, contractors, and suppliers to develop initial project concept, specification, design, scope, fabrication/construction, and installation. Manage the bidding, evaluation, and selection process of contractors for the design and construction of Facilities and department led projects. Create project budgets and ensure accuracy. Supervise engineers and on-site contractors. Communicate and work with department design team members, bringing technical expertise and knowledge to projects, and managing the overall execution of projects. Determine and prioritize project tasks and develop project schedule and timelines to achieve project's final goals on time and in budget. Implement new engineering strategies and technologies to replace facilities equipment and systems at their end of life (EOL).
• Personnel Supervision - Manage manpower including assigning roles and responsibilities to associates/contractors and providing technical expertise and mentorship, as necessary.
• Budget Management -  Maintain organizational budgets for capital investment and expense activities, such as maintenance and repair of facility assets and contracted support services. Budget responsibility exceeds $1M annually. Budget responsibilities include formulating requests, tracking expenditures, analyzing trends, and adjusting budgets to address business needs.
• Contract Management -  Arrange and manage appropriate contracted services support, as needed. Ensure all work meets or exceeds defined organization targets. Oversee and manage work to ensure all deliverables comply with associated contract documents, codes and regulations, industry standards, and Honda standards, as applicable.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 6-10 years of relevant work experience
• Knowledge/Experience Required: Strong subject matter knowledge of industrial utility and infrastructure systems through design, construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities. Knowledge of building/campus facilities management and operations, including construction skilled trades.
• Knowledge/Experience Preferred: Professional Engineering (PE) license. Project management experience. Knowledge of building codes, governing regulations, and industry standards, such as NFPA, NEC, OSHA, EPA, and local building and utility-related codes. Experience with asset management system software.
• Skills Required: Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills; customer focus (building productive relationships); Microsoft Office, and AutoCAD/Revit capabilities.
• Demonstrated Abilities: Effective communication of ideas to gain consensus from individuals or teams. Technical proficiency with expertise on some of the topics within area of expertise. Balancing multiple projects simultaneously. Comprehending technical drawings and specifications. Planning and executing special projects and reporting. Working well in a collaborative environment.
• Honda Factors: Ability to balance the wants/needs of the customer with Facilities operational requirements. Knowledge of Honda project flow, budgeting, and cost reporting. Project tracking and reporting for PDCA development.

Working Conditions

• Office, vehicle workshop, mechanical/electrical equipment room, and vehicle test environments.
• Willingness to travel for equipment confirmation, department reviews, and business planning events.
• Ability to work overtime, as needed, to complete tasks.
• Work all appropriate weekends/shutdowns to manage projects and cover operational needs.
