Job Description

Theology Faculty Position

The University of Mary at 7500 University Dr, Bismarck, ND invites applications for a faculty position in theology to begin in the fall semester of 2026. S alary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and rank. Applicants should excel in teaching at the undergraduate level, demonstrate a commitment to supporting student formation outside of the classroom, and have an active research agenda. Rank and area of specialization are open.

Responsibilities entail teaching a 4/4 load comprised of courses at the undergraduate level with the possibility of teaching graduate courses. Inspired by the Second Vatican Council, the Theology Program recognizes the Bible as the ‘Soul of Theology’; and our pedagogy is shaped by this principle.   Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to teaching theology formed by and responsive to Scripture and Tradition as presented by the Catholic Church’s Magisterium. The successful candidate will be able to teach the biblical narrative   as well as broad topical courses in our theology major (e.g., Trinity, Sacramental Theology, etc.).

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a joyful commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church in their entirety, zeal for the New Evangelization, and a pedagogy that prioritizes student formation, and must seek the mandatum from the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Bismarck. All faculty are expected to demonstrate a willingness to support and advance the Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine mission and identity of the University of Mary (see ).

Required qualifications include:
  • Doctorate in theology, biblical studies, or a related field preferred by time of appointment (ABD candidates will be considered)
  • Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level (or, for those with no undergraduate level teaching experience, the strong promise of excellence)
  • An active research agenda
  • Support for the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae , the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities
  • Build a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the School of Arts and Sciences and throughout the university in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that  all be received as Christ.
